Heart rate tells you how hard the pump is working. It doesn't tell you if the delivery arrived.
Your smartwatch has trained you to watch beats per minute. It's a useful number. But a heart rate of 72 tells you the pump is running at a normal speed — it says nothing about whether oxygen is actually reaching your blood.
That's what SpO₂ measures: the percentage of your hemoglobin that's carrying oxygen. For most healthy adults at rest it sits between 95% and 100%. It's the number that decides whether a hospital sends you home or admits you.
Here's the uncomfortable part. Someone can hold a textbook 98% at 2 p.m. in a waiting room, and dip well below that, dozens of times, between midnight and 6 a.m. Daytime readings can look perfect. That's not a contradiction — it's the whole reason nights go unnoticed for years.

This isn't a new invention looking for believers. It's the same measurement technique used in operating rooms, emergency departments, cardiac rehab, neonatal units, and every commercial ambulance in the country. It became routine because it works, it's non-invasive, and it's fast.

Two colors of light, and the difference between them.
Blood that's carrying oxygen and blood that isn't absorb light differently. Oxygenated hemoglobin lets more red light pass through; deoxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more of it. Infrared light behaves the opposite way.
The T7 shines both wavelengths — roughly 660 nm red and 940 nm infrared — through your fingertip and measures what comes out the other side. Because your arteries pulse, the signal rises and falls with every heartbeat, which lets the processor separate arterial blood from everything else in the way. The ratio between the two absorption signals gives you the saturation percentage. This is the Beer–Lambert relationship, applied to the one thing it genuinely works for.
That same pulsing signal produces two extras: your pulse rate, and the plethysmograph waveform — the wave shape that tells you whether the reading is trustworthy or whether your hand is just cold.

Three things that will ruin your reading
- Nail polish and gel nails. Especially dark colors. Use a bare finger or turn the device sideways.
- Cold fingers or a tight sleeve. Poor circulation to the fingertip means there's not enough pulsing signal to read.
- Moving, talking, or bright light. Sit still, stay quiet, keep it out of direct sunlight or a lamp.
